Titre : The Creole Debate Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : John H. McWhorter, Auteur Editeur : UK : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 2018 Importance : 173 P Format : 151 x 228 x 11mm | 280g ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-108-45083-6 Langues : Anglais (eng) Langues originales : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 427 Variantes historiques et géographiques, variantes locales Résumé : Creoles have long been the subject of debate in linguistics, with many conflicting views, both on how they are formed, and what their political and linguistic status should be. Indeed, over the past twenty years, some creole specialists have argued that it has been wrong to think of creoles as anything but language blends in the same way that Yiddish is a blend of German and Hebrew and Slavic. Here, John H. McWhorter debunks the most widely accepted idea that creoles are created in the same way as 'children', taking characteristics from both 'parent' languages, and its underlying assumption that all historical and biological processes are the same. Instead, the facts support the original, and more interesting, argument that creoles are their own unique entity and are among the world's only genuinely new languages. Titre : The Language of Humor: An Introduction Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Don L. F. Nilsen, Auteur Editeur : UK : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 2019 Importance : 387p Format : 6 x 0.9 x 9 inches ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-108-40396-2 Langues : Anglais (eng) Langues originales : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 808 rhétorique et recueils : rhétorique : art et techniques de l'écriture et de l'expression orale. Classer ici le plagiat Résumé : Much of today's communication is carried out through various kinds of humor, and we therefore need to be able to understand its many aspects. Here, two of the world's leading pioneers in humor studies, Alleen and Don Nilsen, explore how humor can be explained across the numerous sub-disciplines of linguistics. Drawing on examples from language play and jokes in a range of real-life contexts, such as art, business, marketing, comedy, creative writing, science, journalism and politics, the authors use their own theory of 'Features, functions and subjects of Humor' to analyze humor across all disciplines. Each highly accessible chapter uses a rich array of examples to stimulate discussion and interaction even in large classes. Supplemental PowerPoints to accompany each of the 25 chapters are available online, taking many of the insights from the chapters for further interactional discussions with students. Titre : The Principles of Comparative Philology (Cambridge Library Collection - Linguistics) Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Archibald Henry Sayce, Auteur Editeur : UK : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 2019 Importance : 381P Format : 21.5x14 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-108-08228-0 Langues : Anglais (eng) Langues originales : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 420 Anglais et vieil anglais (anglo-saxon) : indice de base 42 Résumé : Archibald Henry Sayce (1845-1933) became interested in Middle Eastern languages and scripts while still a teenager. Old Persian and Akkadian cuneiform had recently been deciphered, and popular enthusiasm for these discoveries was running high when Sayce began his academic career at Oxford in 1869. This 1874 work, based on a series of lectures, discusses the relatively new science of comparative philology, its disciplines and its relationship to physiology, history, and religion. The work describes the ways in which the laws of language, and especially of language change and development, can be hypothesised and tested. Sayce also considers, and takes issue with, the notion of 'the metaphysics of language', and examines the significance of comparative philology to the study of comparative religion and mythology. The final chapter deals with the specific issue of analogy in language development, in particular in relation to changes in pronunciation and word-stress.
