Titre : Evolutionary Linguistics Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : April McMahon, Auteur Editeur : LONDON : Archives Contemporaines Année de publication : 2012 Importance : 309 p. Format : 17.4 x 1.4 x 24.7 cm Langues : Anglais (eng) Langues originales : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 401 Philosophie et théorie Résumé : How did the biological, brain and behavioural structures underlying human language evolve? When, why and where did our ancestors become linguistic animals, and what has happened since? This book provides a clear, comprehensive but lively introduction to these interdisciplinary debates. Written in an approachable style, it cuts through the complex, sometimes contradictory and often obscure technical languages used in the different scientific disciplines involved in the study of linguistic evolution. Assuming no background knowledge in these disciplines, the book outlines the physical and neurological structures underlying language systems, and the limits of our knowledge concerning their evolution. Discussion questions and further reading lists encourage students to explore the primary literature further, and the final chapter demonstrates that while many questions still remain unanswered, there is a growing consensus as to how modern human languages have arisen as systems by the interplay of evolved structures and cultural transmission. Titre : Feminism, Absolutism, and Jansenism : louis XIV and the port royal nuns Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Daniella Kostroun, Auteur Editeur : LONDON : Archives Contemporaines Année de publication : 2014 Importance : 273 p. Format : 23 cm. x 15 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-107-67490-5 Langues : Anglais (eng) Langues originales : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 273 controverses et hérésies doctrinales Résumé : Feminism, Absolutism, and Jansenism chronicles seventy years of Jansenist conflict and its complex intersection with power struggles between gallican bishops, Parlementaires, the Crown and the Pope. Daniella Kostroun focuses on the nuns of Port-Royal-des-Champs, whose community was disbanded by Louis XIV in 1709 as a threat to the state. Paradoxically, it was the nuns' adherence to their strict religious rule and the ideal of pious, innocent and politically disinterested behavior that allowed them to challenge absolutism effectively. Adopting methods from cultural studies, feminism and the Cambridge School of political thought, Kostroun examines how these nuns placed gender at the heart of the Jansenist challenge to the patriarchal and religious foundations of absolutism, they responded to royal persecution with a feminist defense of women's spiritual and rational equality and of the autonomy of the individual subject, thereby offering a bold challenge to the patriarchal and religious foundations of absolutism. Titre : Germinal Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : larry duffy, Auteur Editeur : LONDON : Archives Contemporaines Année de publication : 2007 Importance : 476p. Format : 12.5x20 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84022-618-8 Langues : Anglais (eng) Langues originales : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 809 Histoire, analyse, critique littéraires générales (et portant sur plus d'une littérature nationale) Résumé : Germinal (1885) is the thirteenth in Emile Zola's cycle of twenty novels about the Rougon-Macquart dynasty. It tells the story of Etienne Lantier, from the illegitimate Macquart branch of the family, who arrives in the mining settlement of Montsou, and witnesses at first hand the appalling conditions in which miners live and work. Gradually becoming embroiled in a bitter dispute between the miners and their employers, he eventually leads the strike which is the centrepiece of the novel. But this is more than the struggle of labour against capital. It is also the struggle of the hungry against the well-fed, against the passivity and resignation passed down over generations of starving people, and ultimately against hunger itself, represented by the fantastical devouring monster of the mine, which swallows up men, just as the beast of the modern industrial economy relentlessly swallows up capital. This apparent pessimism about society is offset by the possibility of rebirth and regeneration. For all the inherited misery of the downtrodden, the old order may some day be overturned.
