Titre : Language Cohesion and Form Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : yorick wilks, Auteur Editeur : new york : Archives Contemporaines Année de publication : 2010 Importance : 311pages Format : 229 x 152 x 18 mm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978052112963 Langues : Anglais (eng) Langues originales : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 418 Résumé : Margaret Masterman was a pioneer in the field of computational linguistics. Working in the earliest days of language processing by computer, she believed that meaning, not grammar, was the key to understanding languages, and that machines could determine the meaning of sentences. She was able, even on simple machines, to undertake sophisticated experiments in machine translation, and carried out important work on the use of semantic codings and thesauri to determine the meaning structure of texts. This volume brings together Masterman's groundbreaking papers for the first time. Through his insightful commentaries, Yorick Wilks argues that Masterman came close to developing a computational theory of language meaning based on the ideas of Wittgenstein, and shows the importance of her work in the philosophy of science and the nature of iconic languages. Of key interest in computational linguistics and artificial intelligence, it will remind scholars of Masterman's significant contribution to the field. Titre : Language Learner Autonomy : Theory, Practice and Research Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : David Little, Auteur Editeur : U-K : Multilingual Matters Année de publication : 2017 Importance : 266 p. Format : 23.5 cm. 15.5 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-78309-858-3 Langues : Anglais (eng) Langues originales : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 418 Résumé : This is the first book on language learner autonomy to combine comprehensive accounts of classroom practice with empirical and case-study research and a wide-ranging engagement with applied linguistic and pedagogical theory. It provides a detailed description of an autonomy classroom in action, focusing on Danish mixed-ability learners of English at lower secondary level, and reports the findings of a longitudinal research project that explored the learning achievement over four years of one class in the same Danish school. It also presents two learner case studies to show that the autonomy classroom responds to the challenges of differentiation and inclusion, and two institutional case studies that illustrate the power of autonomous learning to support the social inclusion of adult refugees and the educational inclusion of immigrant children. The concluding chapter offers some reflections on teacher education for language learner autonomy. Each chapter ends with discussion points and suggestions for further reading. Titre : Language Learning in Intercultural Perspective : approaches through drama and ethnography Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Byram, Michael, Auteur Editeur : United Kingdom : Archives Contemporaines Année de publication : 2010 Importance : 320 p. Format : 15.2 x 1.7 x 22.9 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-62559-3 Langues : Anglais (eng) Langues originales : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 418 Résumé : Language Learning in Intercultural Perspective addresses the ways in which language learning is related to learning about other cultures and to acquiring an ability to communicate across cultural frontiers. It argues that language learners need to develop sensitivity to cultural difference and its impact on communication, and to acquire the skills of discovering and interpreting other cultures, other values, beliefs and behaviours which lie beneath the surface of cross-cultural communication. Contributors show how drama can be used to develop cultural awareness and how learners can acquire ethnographic skills to help them investigate and understand socio-cultural aspects of language which play an important role in second language acquisition. The contributors are all respected educationalists from a range of countries and different cultural contexts. Titre : Language Policy and Political Economy : English in a Global Context Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Thomas Ricento, Auteur Editeur : U-K : oxford Année de publication : 2016 Importance : 313 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-19-065673-7 Langues : Anglais (eng) Langues originales : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 418 Résumé : This volume articulates a new framework for language policy research that explores the connections between language policy and political economy. The chapters are united in their focus on English, a language that has enjoyed a reputation as a global language over the course of the last century and that is perceived as a tool for socioeconomic mobility. The book argues that adopting a new, political economic approach to language policy research will enhance our ability to provide more consistent explanations about the status, functions, benefits, and limitations of English in its various roles in non-English dominant countries. The book poses the questions: Does English serve as a lingua franca and does it advance the interests of sustainable economic and social development in low-income countries? Written by leading experts in language policy research, the chapters reveal the myriad and complex ways in which government leaders, policymakers, and communities make decisions about the languages that will be taught as subjects or used as media of instruction in schools. English is often advertised as a social good with unquestioned instrumental value, yet access to quality English-medium education in low-income countries tends to be restricted to those with sufficient economic means to pay for it. As the capitalist world economy continues to change and grow, and assuming that translation technologies continue to improve, it is likely that the roles and relative importance of English as a global language will change significantly. Assessing the costs and benefits of acquiring English therefore takes on increased urgency. The book argues that a political economic approach is particularly appropriate in this endeavor, as it takes into account theories and empirical findings from a range of disciplines in order to assess and explain real-world phenomena that do not fit neatly into boxes labeled economic, social, political or cultural. Together, the chapters in this volume argue for a new direction in language policy studies-grounded in political economy - that will explain why English has been experienced as both a blessing and curse in different parts of the world, why English continues to be useful as a lingua franca for particular sectors of the global economy, and why it is a detriment to economic development in many low-income countries. The book will be invaluable to language policy scholars, policy-makers, and educators, significantly advancing research in this important field.
