The volume takes a close look at discourse perspectives on academic genres. In the context of scientific communication and the evolution of postmodern culture and society, academic genres have undergone various changes. The study shows that cultural heterogeneity of academic genres, styles and discourses now gives way to an increasing hybridization and discusses theoretical aspects of this process. The second part focuses on specific dimensions of hybridization, in particular between global and local academic genres and discourses, and between real and virtual ones. |

A collection of original papers by researchers working in the field which comprehensively addresses the area of second language academic listening. This collection of original papers comprehensively addresses the area of second language academic listening. The papers are grouped under five broad headings. The first section provides an overview of research relevant to second language lecture comprehension. The second analyses aspects of the cognitive processes involved in listening comprehension. In the third section, the object of the comprehension process is examined, and in the fourth, ethnographic approaches are explored by extending the concept of listening comprehension to place it in the wider context of 'the culture of learning'. In the final section, the theory of second language listening comprehension is related to practical pedagogic concerns. Each section is preceded by an accessible introduction and the book as a whole provides detailed coverage of important aspects of academic listening phenomena. |

This volume brings together 11 TIRF-related research papers on the development and application of English language teaching and learning strategies on English language assessment. The papers are all written by recipients of The International Research Foundation for English language teaching (TIRF) Doctoral Dissertation Grants (DDGs). TIRF is a nonprofit organisation whose mission is to generate new knowledge about English language teaching and learning, applying research findings to practical language problems by working collaboratively with teachers, researchers, authors, publishers, philanthropic foundations, government agencies, and major companies such as Cambridge English Language Assessment. The aim of the publication is to support TIRF's mission to: (1) to implement a research and development programme that will generate new knowledge and inform and improve the quality of English language teaching and learning; (2) to promote the application of research on practical language problems; (3) to collect, organise, and disseminate information and research on the teaching and learning of English; and (4) to influence the formation and implementation of appropriate language education policies, recognising the importance of local/transnational languages and cultures worldwide, and of English as an international language |
