Résumé : |
Prophet and social critic, William Blake was one of the most strikingly original poets of the Romantic age. Writing at a time of strict social convention and religious conformity, Blake spoke out against all restrictions to human freedom. His belief in the power of the imagination, the supremacy of the emotions - even anger - and the need for free, open communication, was the guiding principle of his poetry. This volume contains poems of sharp clarity as well as his longer, more elegiac verse. From the familiar lyricism of `The Tiger` and `The Sick Rose` to the great poems, such as `Auguries of Innocence` and `The Mental Traveller`, in which he expands on religious themes and social ideology using powerful symbolism and haunting imagery, this selection demonstrates the depth and scope of his extraordinary genius. |
