Son éducation ainsi que celle de sa soeur Cassandra, dont elle restera très proche jusqu'à sa mort, se fera principalement dans le domaine familial. Elle se met à l'écriture de parodies sentimentales avant de se consacrer aux romans 'Northanger Abbey', 'Raison et sentiment' et 'Orgueil et préjugés' entre 1795 et 1798. En 1801, la famille Austen s'installe à Bath et quatre ans plus tard, le père de Jane décède : l'auteur ne se mariera pas, tout comme sa soeur Cassandra, et consacrera sa vie à l'éducation de ses neveux et nièces. 'Raison et sentiment', 'Orgueil et préjugés' et 'Mansfield park' sont publiés successivement en 1811, 1813 et 1814. Elle laisse derrière elle un roman inachevé, 'Sanditon', emportée par la phtisie à l'âge de 41 ans. L'auteur ne connut pas le succès en son temps et ne fut redécouvert qu'à la fin du XIXème siècle.
