The Principles of Comparative Philology (Cambridge Library Collection - Linguistics) / Archibald Henry Sayce
Titre : The Principles of Comparative Philology (Cambridge Library Collection - Linguistics) Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Archibald Henry Sayce, Auteur Editeur : UK : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 2019 Importance : 381P Format : 21.5x14 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-108-08228-0 Langues : Anglais (eng) Langues originales : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 420 Anglais et vieil anglais (anglo-saxon) : indice de base 42 Résumé : Archibald Henry Sayce (1845-1933) became interested in Middle Eastern languages and scripts while still a teenager. Old Persian and Akkadian cuneiform had recently been deciphered, and popular enthusiasm for these discoveries was running high when Sayce began his academic career at Oxford in 1869. This 1874 work, based on a series of lectures, discusses the relatively new science of comparative philology, its disciplines and its relationship to physiology, history, and religion. The work describes the ways in which the laws of language, and especially of language change and development, can be hypothesised and tested. Sayce also considers, and takes issue with, the notion of 'the metaphysics of language', and examines the significance of comparative philology to the study of comparative religion and mythology. The final chapter deals with the specific issue of analogy in language development, in particular in relation to changes in pronunciation and word-stress. Titre : The structure of Complew Words. Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Empson. William., Auteur Editeur : Penguin books Année de publication : 1995. Importance : 450p. Présentation : couv.illu.en coul Format : 13cm*20cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-14-023148-9 Langues : Anglais (eng) Langues originales : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 420 Anglais et vieil anglais (anglo-saxon) : indice de base 42 Résumé : Empson's classic may "have even more to teach us about language now than It did In 1951. when this remarkable book was first published," writes Jonathan Cutler in his valuable foreword. Empson elegantly demonstrates the weight of allusion and Implication borne by even the simplest words of our language: man, honest, quite, dog. he explores the complex play of such words in social situations and in literature, producing in the process brilliant critical essays--on sense in Wordsworth's Prelude, honest in Othello and King Lear all in Paradise Lost--which go straight to the heart of the matter.
Lively and irreverent, this book offers persuasive accounts of the structure of metaphor, the statements carried by words, and the failure of dictionary entries to capture the most pertinent aspects of the structure and meaning of words. Culler writes that It stakes out "a new position in debates about meaning and context about the literary in Its relation to the social and the historical. Empson's brilliant discussions of words which express complex social attitudes toward one's fellows or toward moral principles open rich chapters of social and literary history."The structure of Complew Words.
