Titre : Reason and Religion in the English Revolution : the challenge of socinianism Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Sarah Mortimer, Auteur Editeur : Columbia University Press Année de publication : April 12, 2010 Importance : 0521517044 Présentation : Item Weight : 1.25 pounds Format : 6 x 0.75 x 9 inches ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-51704-1 Langues : Français (fre) Langues originales : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 273 controverses et hérésies doctrinales Résumé : This book provides a significant rereading of political and ecclesiastical developments during the English Revolution, by integrating them into broader European discussions about Christianity and civil society. Sarah Mortimer reveals the extent to which these discussions were shaped by the writing of the Socinians, an extremely influential group of heterodox writers. She provides the first treatment of Socinianism in England for over fifty years, demonstrating the interplay between theological ideas and political events in this period as well as the strong intellectual connections between England and Europe. Royalists used Socinian ideas to defend royal authority and the episcopal Church of England from both Parliamentarians and Thomas Hobbes. But Socinianism was also vigorously denounced and, after the Civil Wars, this attack on Socinianism was central to efforts to build a church under Cromwell and to provide toleration. The final chapters provide a new account of the religious settlement of the 1650s. Titre : The Young Derrida and French Philosophy, 1945–1968 Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Edward Baring, Auteur Editeur : Columbia University Press Année de publication : 23 Jan. 2014 Importance : 350 pages Présentation : 680 g Format : 15.24 x 2.01 x 22.86 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-107-67462-2 Langues : Français (fre) Langues originales : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 194 France Résumé : In this powerful study Edward Baring sheds fresh light on Jacques Derrida, one of the most influential yet controversial intellectuals of the twentieth century. Reading Derrida from a historical perspective and drawing on new archival sources, The Young Derrida and French Philosophy shows how Derrida's thought arose in the closely contested space of post-war French intellectual life, developing in response to Sartrian existentialism, religious philosophy and the structuralism that found its base at the École Normale Supérieure. In a history of the philosophical movements and academic institutions of post-war France, Baring paints a portrait of a community caught between humanism and anti-humanism, providing a radically new interpretation of the genesis of deconstruction and of one of the most vibrant intellectual moments of modern times.
