Thus a ‘British Isles’ approach should not be taken as ruling out a European emphasis as the basis of alternative interpretations. At the time of writing, for example, it looks as if the Republic of Ireland is moving towards a more European future than that of a United Kingdom which is still coping with the challenges of its postimperial past.
